FOUNDED IN 1955
It was through a man named John L. Meares and his obedience to the voice of God that the Evangel church we now have was birthed. John Meares, while pastoring a thriving church in Memphis, Tennessee, was called to Washington, D.C., along with his wife, Mary Lee Meares, to start an integrated church. God said, “I am sending you to a people that are hungry for the Gospel.” Knowing no one in Washington, D.C., in 1955, he moved with full confidence that he had heard from God. Preaching alongside the late Jack Coe in an evangelistic tent revival meeting, never had he witnessed such massive numbers of people coming to hear God’s Word and witness the numerus miraculous healings. Neither had John Meares ever preached to the number of blacks that were attending the revival. He realized that these were the people that God said were hungry for the Gospel.
In March 1989, Bishop John passed the torch of Evangel’s leadership. He consecrated his son, Donald D. Meares, as the Senior Pastor of Evangel. Pastor Don set his face like flint to lead his generation in imparting the vision and destiny of the church. The church continued to grow and flourish. In 2001, with a seating capacity of 2,500, the present worship edifice was dedicated to the Lord. We have been blessed and highly favored by the Lord.
